Eligibility & selection

Who can apply

  • Junior Translator / Hindi: a Master's degree with Hindi and English at degree level (as the subject, a compulsory or elective paper, or the medium of exam), plus a diploma or certificate in Hindi-English translation, or 2 years of translation work in a central or state government office or a Government of India undertaking.
  • Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist & Metallurgist): 12th (+2) or equivalent with Physics and Chemistry.
  • Staff and Welfare Inspector: a degree plus one of these: diploma in labour/social welfare or labour laws, LLB with labour law papers, PG diploma in personnel management, MBA (HR) or MBA with personnel management papers, or a PG diploma in HRM that covers personnel management.
  • Public Prosecutor: a law degree and five years' standing as an advocate at the Bar.
  • Chief Law Assistant: a law degree and 3 years' practice as a pleader at the Bar. Serving railway employees with a law degree and at least 5 years of railway service can also apply.
  • Senior Publicity Inspector: a degree plus a diploma in public relations, advertising, journalism or mass communication. Two years' experience is desirable, not compulsory.
  • Scientific Assistant (Training): a Master's in Psychology with at least 50% marks.
  • You must hold the qualification by 4 December 2026. If you're still waiting for a final result, you can't apply.
  • Age is counted on 1 January 2027. Upper limit for UR/EWS: 30 for Lab Assistant, 32 for Public Prosecutor, 33 for Junior Translator, Staff and Welfare Inspector and Senior Publicity Inspector, 35 for Scientific Assistant and 40 for Chief Law Assistant. Nobody born after 1 January 2009 can apply.
  • OBC (NCL) get 3 extra years and SC/ST 5. PwBD, ex-servicemen, serving railway staff and widowed, divorced or judicially separated women get more.
  • Medical standard: B-1 for Lab Assistant and Scientific Assistant, C-2 for Junior Translator and C-1 for the rest. If you fail the medical for your post, you won't be offered another one.
  • Apply to one RRB only. More than one application gets all of them rejected and can get you debarred.

Exam pattern

One CBT for every post

There's a single computer-based test. Half of it is on your own subject.

Duration 90 minutes (120 for candidates eligible for a scribe)
Questions 100, one mark each
Wrong answer 1/3 mark cut
Language English, Hindi or one of 13 regional languages, chosen in the form
Section Questions
Professional Ability (your post's subject) 50
General Awareness 15
General Intelligence & Reasoning 15
Mathematics 10
General Science 10
Total 100

RRB says the split is indicative and the actual paper can vary a little. Marks are normalised if the CBT runs in more than one shift.

Minimum marks to qualify: UR and EWS 40%, OBC (NCL) and SC 30%, ST 25%. PwBD candidates can get 2 marks of relaxation if there aren't enough of them for their reserved posts.

Junior Translator is different

The paper tests English and Hindi equally. 30 questions are on Hindi and 20 on English, and these 50 aren't translated: Hindi questions come only in Hindi, English ones only in English. The other 50 cover general knowledge, reasoning, simple arithmetic and computer basics. The language part is set at 12th standard.

After the CBT, 10 times the number of vacancies (category-wise) are called for a translation test. You need 60% to pass it, but it's only qualifying. Your merit rank comes from the CBT marks alone.

After the CBT

RRB calls candidates equal to the number of vacancies in each RRB (1:1) for document verification and the medical, based on CBT merit and the posts you opted for. If two people have the same marks, the older one ranks higher. If the age is also the same, it goes by the alphabetical order of the first name.

How to apply

  1. Go to rrbapply.gov.in. If you made an account for any RRB notice in 2024, 2025 or 2026, log in with it. Otherwise click Apply, then Create an Account. You'll need your own mobile number and email. A phone browser works fine for the whole form.
  2. Fill in "Create an Account" very carefully. Name, parents' names and date of birth must match your 10th certificate. Nothing here can be changed later, not even your mobile number or email. If your Aadhaar shows a different date of birth from your 10th certificate, get Aadhaar corrected first, and enter the 10th date in the form.
  3. Verify your identity with Aadhaar or DigiLocker. You can skip it, but then you face much stricter checks at every stage.
  4. Work through the sections: personal details, other details, qualifications, uploads, then preview and preferences. Use the Add button to put in qualifications beyond 10th. If a certificate shows only the month and year, enter the last day of that month (May 2023 becomes 31-05-2023).
  5. Pick your RRB and rank the posts and zones under it. You can apply to one RRB only, and this choice is final. A post you don't pick is treated as a post you don't want, so rank every post you qualify for.
  6. Take the live photo when asked: plain white background, dark clothes, face fully visible with no cap, mask or glasses. Don't point the camera at a printed photo.
  7. Upload your signature: black ink on white paper, running handwriting (not capitals), JPG, 30 to 49 KB. SC/ST candidates who want the free train pass also upload the caste certificate as a PDF under 400 KB.
  8. Check the preview properly. Once you submit for payment, you can't edit anything until the correction window.
  9. Pay online by UPI, card or net banking by 6 December. Your application only counts once the payment confirmation comes by SMS or email. Note down your registration number and print the form.

Keep ready: 10th certificate, qualification certificates, caste/EWS certificate if claiming reservation (OBC-NCL issued on or after 1 April 2026, EWS for the financial year 2025-26), disability certificate from the UDID portal if you're PwBD (it must be issued by 4 December), and proof of the present address you give in the form.

Already in a government job, or joining one later? You'll need an NOC from your employer at DV, even if you join after applying.
